Fallet-Prevostat
To those in the know, nestled behind that large grey door in the middle of Avize is a wonderful surprise. I had passed it on several occasions not knowing that there was anything of note and only when I saw a Belgian family loading their car did I think to stop and see what was going on…I am greeted by a delightfully old French lady and immediately told to help move some cases of Champagne. My French is patchy so I do as I’m told. Eventually we finish loading the car and I am told to sit in a quaint room in the front of the house which doesn’t look like it has seen a decorator for over half a century. Two unlabelled bottles are removed from the fridge and some glasses are filled up. I am bowled over by the simple yet wonderful expression of Avize. Immensely rich with notes of fig and nectarine. The mouthfeel is superb. I immediately ordered 12 bottles. They come in Brut and Extra Brut. Every time I return to Champagne, which as you might guess is often, I buy a case or two. I have, as yet, not worked out whether she makes a vintage wine, where her vines are and what processes she uses. I will report back when I find out! She sells the wine under three different labels: Fallet-Prevostat, Fallet-Gourron and Fallet-M for reasons I choose to ignore.
