Bernard Lonclas

Producer from the village of Bassuet, North East of Vitry le Francois, on the extremes of the region of Champagne. They have 10 hectares of Chardonnay in and around Bassuet and buy Pinot Noir and Meunier from the Marne Valley.
Their Selection is a Meunier heavy blend of the three grapes and is a crisp, lean wine. Simple and with a high dosage of 12 g/ltr.
Their Blanc de Blancs is 100% Bassuet with a far lower dosage of 5 g/ltr. It shows a high level of fruit and is a good introduction to the wines from this area.
For me though the go to wine is their Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut. 4 g/ltr and a further year on the lees gives you so much more in the glass as well as giving a better representation of the terroir. Fresh, pithey with plenty of lime.
The Blanc de Blancs Grand Brut is the same of the Extra Brut but with 9 g/ltr. A bit more green apple on the palate with the weight of sugar hitting the back palate. Good width on the mid palate but I’d stick to the Extra Brut.
The Rose is made from red wine from Meunier from Basseut blended with Chardonnay. It was very difficult to get the rose from it but I found it well balanced nonetheless.
Their Millesime is a Chardonnay/Meunier blend 80/20. Good weight and reasonable sugar balance but lacking the precision of the Extra Brut.
Cuvee Prestige is a delightfully fun dip into the world of semi sweet Champagne. 14 g/ltr hits you hard but and the balance is a little off but oh for a bit of fun!
