Bruno Michel

I was fortunate to spend some time with Bruno to discuss his wines, organic methods and importantly, RUGBY!

His 14 hectares are split into 35 parcels in the villages of Pierry and Moussy. His vineyards are certified ECOCERT and he uses organic fertilizers and natural extracts including valerian and liquid nettle!

I must confess Bruno and I spent far too much time discussing rugby that I didn’t really get a chance to ask him much about his production method. As is the way of the Champenoise he has kindly invited me back to see his facilities and vineyards and of course have dinner whilst discussing more rugby. I will update once I have returned!

Bruno’s wines are fruity and terroir driven. I noted a touch too much oxidation in his vintage wines for my palate but his Brut Cuvee Blanche, Cuvee Rebelle and Rose are clean and crisp.

Cuvee Blanche, a 50/50 Chardonnay/Meunier blend, is a fruity wine with a touch of salt, redcurrant and bitter apricot. Great tension.

Cuvee Rebelle made from old vines and a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Meunier has a touch more toast and a great sweet texture. Much richer in style.

Their Cuvee Rose is a lovely red tinged pink. Rose hip and raspberry laced in caster sugar. Yummy!

The most recent Millesime, 2002, showed a worrying stewed note that instantly put me off. I may have to return to this.

Bruno represents so much of what I enjoy about Champagne: Passion, respect of nature, understanding of organic ehics and a belief in his method. He is a joy to sit down and talk to and luckily his wines are lovely to drink too!
